Lizzie asked me to reach out to all you canine lovers with an important message: Doggies want to celebrate Halloween too! No no no. Not in this way.

More like, this way.

Pumpkin Dog Biscuits are the perfect fall treat for your pooch. Pureed pumpkin is packed with nutrients – and dogs love it.
After I roasted, pureed, and froze some pumpkin (and Lizzie happily gobbled up a couple of bits that made it to the floor), I got to thinking that homemade dog biscuits with pumpkin in ’em might be pretty popular around here. A quick Google of course turned up a few recipes (everyone thinks of these things first, I swear!) and I whipped up a variation of these Pumpkin Dog Biscuits that I found over on Food.com.

I thought squirrel and acorn shapes were appropriate for the season (and for Miss Squirrel-Obsessed Lizzie).
Liz thinks they’re appropriate for scarfing down.

Trick for treat!

Pumpkin Dog Biscuits
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup pureed pumpkin – canned (not pumpkin pie filling! (Homemade pumpkin puree recipe here – so worth it!))
- 2 eggs
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a large bowl, mix together the pumpkin and the eggs with a fork.
- Add the flour, salt, and milk, and combine until well-mixed. The dough should be very stiff – add a little water if needed to make it workable.
- Sprinkle some flour on your work surface and roll the dough to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, sprinkling on more flour if needed to prevent sticking.
- Cut out shapes, and then lay them on an ungreased cookie sheet, about a half inch apart.
- Try to ignore the pathetic, pleading dog staring intently from just outside the kitchen.
- Bake for 20 minutes, then flip them over and bake for 20 minutes more.
- Let cool, and then treat your pooch!

I see a lot of recipes for homemade dog treats that call for peanut butter and or chocolate. I have heard that both are deadly for dogs. Is this true?
Chocolate definitely can be toxic for dogs. Peanut butter, that’s a new one. I actually give peanut butter to my dogs all of the time, so I’m going to look into that one!
On the question of chocolate for a dog ……NADA but you can use carob in place of it.

Does it have to be whole wheat flour or can it be gluten free or regular flour
I have made PUMPKIN DOG BISCUITS. They are really cool. My dogs just love them.
Love it! Our dogs are huge fans too. ๐
These are a great idea for the holidays. How long do they stay fresh?
Thank you,
Debbie
They last forever! Well – not literally. ๐ I’d say a few weeks, but they tend to not last that long around here!
Great recipe! Both of my labs really enjoyed them. (I did add more wheat flour because my dough wasn’t very stiff and I didn’t add the salt because I seen that another commenter said they didn’t really need them) I’ll definitely make them again, Thank you ๐
I’m so glad I found this recipe. I was using another one but for some reason the website disappeared. The other one didn’t have any salt it in though. Must be for a preservative. A little bit of cinnamon too if ya want a little more flavor. Homemade dog treats are the best. We know what’s in them! , less expensive too. A little time consuming, but aren’t are dogs worth it!!! I just had to say that the dog on this recipe looks so much like my dog, its amazing. Must be a reason why I found this recipe
This recipe to make pumpkin biscuits are very helpful as it helps in getting idea and from this recipe anyone can learn and make it without visiting any other websites besides these you can also take the help from anyone who is expert in making food and all.
Do the pumpkin dog biscuits have to be refrigerated? Also how long do they stay fresh?
No, they don’t. I find they last a good month or longer. They might get a bit stale but my dogs don’t mind!
Do these treats help with anal glad regulation? My big dog needs them done too much , the vet told me to get no scoot treats. They are really expensive so I’m looking fora cheap alternative!
How long are these good for?
I keep all my pup’s homemade cookies in the fridge to make them last longer. Sometimes if I make a double batch I’ll freeze them and defrost as needed.
What is the lifespan?
Don’t typically make cookies with milk in them
Oh gosh, I’ve never had any around long enough to go bad! A couple of weeks, at least? I try to do some testing this fall and report back. ๐
I love your squirrel cookie cutter – something else to add to my never ending shopping list
Use coconut or almond milk as canines are not supposed to have dairy products.
