Cinnamon Dolce Iced Coffee

Cinnamon Dolce Iced Coffee

Posted on Friday, March 28, 2014 in Beverages

I’m proud of myself. In 2014, I’ve really cut down on my Starbucks habit. I drop by maybe once per week, which is a huge improvement over my previously daily habit. Okay, maybe twice per week. Okay, okay – occasionally three times.

But still! I’m doing better.

Spiced Apple Sparklers (Non-Alcoholic)

Spiced Apple Sparklers (Non-Alcoholic)

Posted on Friday, December 27, 2013 in Beverages

I am not one of those people that hates leftovers. In fact, I think they’re sort of awesome. Maybe it’s my inner frugalista … or my inner lazykins. I mean, basically, a free meal – and virtually no work to make it happen? What’s not to love?!

I’m also a fan of taking a leftover ingredient and re-purposing it in a whole new way. And because I tend to go a little crazy on the Crock Pot Spiced Cider around holiday time, we often have a little left over at the end of the night. So I thought, hey! What if I made this into ice cubes?! And then turned those into something all fizzy and stuff?

Crock Pot Cranberry-Orange Mulled Wine

Crock Pot Cranberry-Orange Mulled Wine

This recipe, my friends, comes with a warning.

CONSUME WITH CAUTION.

There is something oh-so very drinkable – and almost weirdly addicting – about this Crock Pot mulled wine. I don’t know if it’s the tart/sweet combo, the cinnamon, the cloves, the wine, the brandy, its ability to warm you from the inside out, the magic of the season, all of it together, or what, but it is very easy to drink.

Spiced Apple Sangria

I’ve decided to try a slightly different angle this year when it comes to winter: I’m going to fully, enthusiastically embrace each phase of the season as it comes.

Rainy but mild? We’re donning raincoats and wellies and heading out to splash in puddles. Dark and dreary? Time to haul out the big blanket and cuddle in front of the fire. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Saint Patrick’s Day … there will be crafts to make, books to read, events to attend. A snowman will happen, and hot chocolate afterwards. And, of course, recipes to make for every season. Lots and lots of recipes.

Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix

Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix

Posted on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 in Foundations

I’ve always refused to buy pre-made pumpkin pie spice mix. Why should I spend the extra money when I already have the spices – cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, maybe some allspice – in my pantry already?! Goshdarnit?!

Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin! Can you ever get tired of pumpkin?! That’s rhetorical question. At least, coming from me it is. But if you asked my guy, he’d have a decidedly quick actual answer. I think he continues to remain sick of pumpkin thanks to last year’s Pumpkinpalooza.

Moist Banana Spice Snack Cake with Cream Cheese Icing

Moist Banana Spice Snack Cake with Cream Cheese Icing

Living in limbo isn’t quite as hard as I thought it would be. It’s sort freeing, actually. My guy helped guide my perspective – “it’s an adventure!” – and for the most part, I’ve gone with that approach.

For 31 days, we are not tied down to a thing! We own nothing! Well, aside from three full-size PODS stuffed to the gills with our furniture and household goods (where does it all come from?!).

I really, really wanted to save this recipe for fall. But dangit, I am excited about it now! So excited, I want to all-cap this from the rooftops and use copious amounts of exclamation points.

Frozen Mexican Hot Chocolate Mocha

Frozen Mexican Hot Chocolate Mocha

My first foray into coffee anything was many, many years ago. Okay, well before that, as a kid, I took a sip of my Gran’s black coffee and thought I was going to hurl. How could something that smelled so great taste so vile?

But then at around age 17 or so, I discovered iced mochas.

Cinnamon Red Hot Buttercream Stuffed Oatmeal Sandwich Cookies

Cinnamon Red Hot Buttercream Stuffed Oatmeal Sandwich Cookies

I’m not sure why cinnamon red hots (also known as cinnamon imperials) are so quintessentially “Valentine’s Day.” I guess because they’re bright red. And hot. And candy. Okay, maybe I know exactly why cinnamon red hots are a Valentine’s Day thing. Never mind.

Anyway, I bought into it and decided that I needed to combine oatmeal cookies with red hots for Valentine’s Day this year. It had to happen.

White Autumn Spice Sangria

White Autumn Spice Sangria

Apples. Pears. Cinnamon sticks. Clove-studded oranges. Wine. Rum. It’s White Autumn Spice Sangria. Yes?

I’ll answer for you – and I hope that’s okay: YES. An enthusiastic yes. Imagine Meg Ryan in “When Harry Met Sally.” That sort of yes.

This sangria is seriously that good.

I’ve had delicious red sangria with hints of fall spices here and there (oh, so good), but never white. So I decided to give it a try, and man oh man, am I glad I did?

That would a be a “yes.”

Apple butter is essentially applesauce cooked (and cooked and cooked) until it’s a beautiful spreading consistency. This apple butter recipe, Sweet Spiced Crock Pot Apple Butter, starts with whole spices, orange juice, and fresh Washington apples. It makes a phenomenal spread for toast, muffins, pancakes, and even this savory sweet dip.

My grandmother, or “Gran” as we called her (but never “Granny,” mind you, as that sounded far too old for her tastes), had the most wonderful garden. As a child, it was nice, sure … but unremarkable to me in the way that whatever we grow up with, no matter what it is, is simply the norm. Conversely, as an adult, now I look back and remember her garden in that larger-than-life way that we adults sometimes remember scenes from our childhood.
